General information regarding the CRC1574

The CRC "Circular Factory" aims to enable integrated linear and circular production on an industrial scale. Its goal is to bring used products and components into new product generations, moving closer to the vision of a perpetual product. Innovative economic systems that decouple resource consumption from economic expansion are essential for achieving sustainable economic growth. The traditional linear economic approach of “take-make-use-dispose” is not a long-term solution, and circular production schemes provide an alternative. In addition to the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Fraunhofer IOSB, Aalen University and the University of Stuttgart are also involved in the research project.

Detailed Job description

The circular factory realizes the linear and circular production. The vision pursued integrates linear and circular production on shared production facilities and thus enables the production of uniform products in large series. The production system is confronted with dynamic uncertainty on a strategic, tactical and operational level. Rigid a priori planning and control of the production system is therefore not possible. This is due in particular to the product-related uncertainties regarding return times, quality and quantity of used products etc.

The circular factory requires robust and at the same time dynamic process and capacity planning, on the basis of which intelligent, adaptive control ensures the rapid response of the production system.

Given this dynamic uncertainty of the condition of the used products or their subsystems and components, it must be decided which new product variants should be created from the used products and with which other subsystems or components they will be combined to form this new product variant.

The procedures for process and capacity planning as well as for production planning and control are based on the evolving ontology of the circular factory and the knowledge graphs generated from it. This creates an executable model for ontology-based process simulation of the circular factory. The dynamic uncertainties of the circular factory also require a robustness consideration.

The volatile requirements of the circular factory require new design principles in production system planning. Short-cycle adjustments to the production system configuration and the layout of the circular factory will be the norm. This requires fundamental properties of the circular factory that go beyond the well-known concepts of flexibility and adaptability.
